Whoopi Goldberg says she apologizes for saying “the Holocaust isn’t about race.”
During The View’s Monday live airing, Goldberg and the rest of the hosts discussed how a school decided to ban the book “Maus,” a novel that depicts the realities of the Holocaust. Goldberg expressed that she was shocked that the school was more upset over the Holocaust content than the nudity included in the literature.
Co-host Joy Behar chimed in, saying the nudity concerns may be “a canard to throw you off from the fact that they don’t like history that makes White people look bad.” In response, Goldberg said, “Well, this is White people doing it to White people, so y’all gonna fight amongst yourselves.” Later on in the convo, the panel of hosts began discussing how teachings about historical events continue to be banned.
“If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race,” said Goldberg, adding that the Holocaust was the result of Nazis’ racist thoughts and actions towards Jews was about “man’s inhumanity to man” and included “two white groups of people.”
Later that day, Goldberg issued a statement, apologizing for her remarks.
“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust “is not about race, but about a man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it is about both. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, “The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systemic annihilation of the Jewish people – who they deemed to be an inferior race.” I stand corrected,” wrote Goldberg on Twitter. “The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused,” Goldberg continued in her statement.
