Whoopi Goldberg revealed that she no longer found dressing up for awards ceremonies enjoyable, citing the backlash she received for her attire at the 65th Academy Awards as a turning point.
In 1993, Goldberg attended the Oscars wearing a purple and lime green jumpsuit. The outfit of choice resulted in her being placed at the forefront of “worst dressed” lists. Fast forward three decades, and the EGOT winner openly acknowledges that the criticism surrounding her outfit selection had a lasting impact on her.
“It hurt my feelings. I’m not going to lie, it hurt my feelings,” she recalled. “It kept me from dressing up for a very long time. You have to remember, in those days, they would say things and you’d think, ‘Do I really look that ridiculous?’”
Additionally, Goldberg revealed that her admiration for “I Love Lucy” and its iconic star, Lucille Ball, served as the true inspiration behind her decision to take the fashion risk.
“Lucy would always come out in these great ensembles. And I thought, I would like to wear that! And green is not a color I would normally wear; let me try it!” Goldberg added.
Throughout the years, Goldberg has embraced her unique sense of style, even venturing into the fashion world by launching her clothing line, Dubgee, in 2019. When discussing her brand, she openly emphasized that individuals should not allow their age to dictate their choice of clothing.
“People will always say to somebody young, ‘Oh, you’re dressing so old,’ and they will say to an older woman, ‘Oh, you’re dressing too young,’” she said. “The clothes that we made, you could be 21 and wear it. You could be 65 and wear it. You could be whatever age you are and look good in it.
