Why Teens Are Turning to Whippets: The Hidden Dangers Of Recreational Nitrous Oxide

Recently, there has been an uptick in the usage of “whippets” in teenagers.  The term is commonly used to describe the recreational use of nitrous oxide.  Most times, people dismiss whippets as a harmless party drug.  However, the inhalation of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, can have major consequences, bringing on significant health risks that can lead to fatal consequences.

If you are not up to date on what whippets are, the drug is contained in small metal canisters filled with gas.  These canisters are typically used in culinary to dispense things like whipped cream.  But recently, they have become popular for the feeling they create.  When inhaled, nitrous oxide can cause a temporary euphoric high, which can bring on lightheadedness and dissociation.  Unfortunately, teens nowadays have underestimated the dangerous effects that are coupled with gas.

While nitrous oxide is also legally used for medical care, such as anesthesia, if mishandled, the gas can bring on several health complications.  Inhaling nitrous oxide can deprive the brain of oxygen and lead to a condition called hypoxia, which causes permanent brain damage or death.  Regarding short-term effects, the gas can cause dizziness, confusion, and loss of motor control.  But, repeated use can result in nerve damage, memory loss, and psychiatric disorders.

Additionally, the fact that this gas is inexpensive and easily accessible makes it appeal to teenagers even more.  Its ease of access has led to the growing popularity of the drug despite its profound effects.  Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently recognized this increasing trend and decided to put an immediate stop to the usage.  Earlier this year, Governor Whitmer signed a pair of bills that aimed to limit the recreational use of nitrous oxide.  In particular, Senate Bill 57 strictly prohibits the sale of nitrous oxide canisters when the sellers feel the cans will be used for drugs.

The effort is a step in the right direction as it makes it difficult for individuals to obtain the gas for recreational usage, aiming to reduce teens from indulging in whippets.  However, this bill alone cannot solve the problem.  Education and awareness surrounding drug usage are extremely important.  As we move forward, parents, community leaders, and advocates must work together to highlight the high risks of nitrous oxide.
