AT&T, Verizon, and certain T-Mobile customers faced a widespread outage on Thursday, impacting cellular service and the internet.
According to Downdetector, at around 4 a.m. ET Thursday, over 32,000 AT&T outages were reported by customers. The number surged to over 50,000 around 7 a.m., with most issues reported in Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.
By 8 a.m., AT&T outages surged to over 71,000, T-Mobile had around 1,100 outages, and Verizon reported about 3,000.
The cause of the service disruption is unclear.
AT&T acknowledged the issue on Thursday morning, stating, “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions.”
“We are working urgently to restore service to them. We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored,” the company said.
Both T-Mobile and Verizon clarified that the outages do not directly impact their networks but claim that Downdetector’s results likely reflect customers attempting to reach users on other networks.
San Francisco’s Fire Department reported an issue affecting AT&T wireless customers’ ability to make and receive phone calls, including 911.
Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications, Virginia’s Prince William County police department, and North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department all issued warnings on X, alerting the public about the outage. They acknowledged that some customers experienced brief difficulties contacting 911.
Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens also stated that they are looking to resolve the AT&T network issue.
