The wife of Alabama councilman Tommy Bryant says she’s currently living in fear and packing a gun in case anyone tries to carry out threats against her husband.
According to TMZ, Nancy Mahler Bryant claims the couple has received at least 400 calls to their home in recent days following his comments referencing black Councilwoman Veronica Freeman. Bryant referred to Councilwoman Freeman as a “house n*gger” while gesturing towards her during a recorded Tarrant City Council meeting.
Despite the backlash and the protests calling for his resignation from the NAACP and BLM, Bryant said he did nothing wrong by using the slur.
Bryant has refused to apologize for “doing what is right,” explaining he was only repeating what Mayor Wayman Newton (the first black mayor of Tarrant) had previously said about the councilwoman.
Bryant now wears a bulletproof vest whenever he leaves his home, and his wife says she is forced to stay inside with the blinds shut to protect herself and her 92-year-old mother, who lives with the couple.
Mayor Newton has denied Bryant’s claims that he previously used the racial slur to describe Freeman.
