At the Grammy Museum’s “An Evening With Will Smith” on Thursday, fans were treated to a special performance from the Fresh Prince himself. He took the stage jamming to his classic hits, including “Miami,” “Summertime,” and “Gettin’ Jiggy with It.” While the audience appreciated hearing some of their favorite throwback songs, one fan took it a step further, proving that she is a huge supporter of the Fresh Prince.
In a viral video clip, while Smith performed “Miami,” one attendee jumped on stage to dance alongside the actor/rapper. Of course, it didn’t take long for security to make an attempt at removing the woman. However, Smith wasn’t bothered by the woman’s presence and signaled for his team to leave her alone. He continued to perform the track while dancing with the woman in a heartfelt moment. Seconds later, Smith ended the song, giving the woman a hug before she was escorted off of the stage.
Additionally, before Smith took the stage, he opened up about how turning his pain into music was the driving force behind the new direction of his sound.
“Music is a more honest place for me where I feel like I can say things that I wouldn’t say, and I can express things, and there’s uncertainty, and there’s sadness,” Smith said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “The two things I would never let myself publicly be is sad or mad. Now I’m just starting to be more honest with myself — I have a lot of fun in life, but I’m sad sometimes, and I can get mad sometimes.”
He added, “I don’t really fit in those [genre] boxes. I wasn’t thinking of it as I’m going to try to make a gospel record. I made a song that resonated with the emotional experience that I had in childhood in church. The ideas were leaning a little more into the spiritual lane… It’s still one story.”
