Congratulations to 37 year old former WNBA player, Becky Hammon, who has been hired as assistant coach by the San Antonio Spurs, making her the second female assistant coach in NBA history (following Lisa Boyer as asst coach of Cleveland Cavs).
“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”
Hammon, who plays for the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars, will retire after her 16th season and take on coaching duties. When Popovich found out Hammon was interested in coaching he invited her to practice during the 2013-14 season allowing her to spend time working with the players and coaching staff.
This is a major step for women in sports. Congrats Becky!
