WNBA Team Tulsa Shock Moving To Dallas, Minority Owner Plans To Sue

Apparently Arizona doesn’t need two WNBA teams so the Tulsa Shock are taking their talents to Dallas. Tulsa serves as home for WNBA talent such as Glory Johnson and Skylar Diggins. Majority owner Bill Cameron made the relocation announcement on Monday.

“I am proud of the team and the organization and know they will stay focused on making this a winning season,” Cameron said in a release. “I am thankful for the support we have received from the city of Tulsa, Mayors (Kathy) Taylor and (Dewey) Bartlett, local fans and sponsors over the past six years. I appreciate the Tulsa investors who stepped up at a critical time to help me bring the Shock to Tulsa from Detroit in 2010. This is a very difficult decision, and I know it is particularly difficult for the Tulsa investors,” he said. “From a business perspective, it was necessary to evaluate options to place the team and the organization in the best position to achieve financial success. After a thorough review, I believe the Dallas-Fort Worth area holds the greatest potential to achieve our long-term business objectives.”

Shock minority owner isn’t happy about the news and is filing a suit. “I have filed a lawsuit this afternoon,” he announced at a news conference Monday evening. “I think that we’ve been wronged in a lot of respects. He’s been deliberately plotting for some time to relocate the franchise of the Tulsa Shock to Texas. Bill Cameron is a purported loyal Oklahoman. With this move that he’s announcing, that we’re fighting, he’s taking away a $20-$30 million economic impact.“

Price says that he invested $250,000 to become part-owner of the team and it was represented that the Shock would stay in Tulsa. He said that details of the relocation were concealed from minority owners and that to relocate the team would “require a super majority vote.”

Could the lawsuit halt the Shock’s move? We’ll have to see!
