An Atlanta woman is behind bars after accidentally shooting her 18-year-old sister while playing with a gun in a car on Sunday.
Taniyria Holt, 24, is facing charges of culpable negligence that inflicts personal injury and improper exhibition of firearms, the Miami Herald reports. More charges could be added.
Dre’Naya Ponder is not expected to survive, according to the outlet. The victim is currently on life support, and doctors are waiting for her family to get in from Georgia.
Police initially thought the shooting was self-inflicted, but Holt waived her right to remain silent and admitted to investigators she accidentally shot Ponder. She told officers there were four women in the vehicle recording themselves around 8:15 p.m. while Holt was handling a 9mm handgun owned by passenger Ashley Burden.
“Thinking the firearm was free of live rounds, Ms. Holt said she went to pass the firearm over to her sister, Ms. Ponder (who was sitting behind the driver), but accidentally shot her,” the arrest report said.
The report went on to say that the cell phone Ponder was using showed signs “of the projectile having penetrated it” before the bullet hit Ponder in the face.
