A Kentucky woman is out of a husband and $10,000 after being catfished by a man claiming to be ‘Stranger Things’ star Dacre Montgomery.
The woman, only identified as McKayla, detailed her experience with the swindler in an episode of the YouTube series “Catfished,” which resurfaced earlier this week.
In sharing her account, McKayla said that she left her toxic husband for “Montgomery” after the two met on an online forum for creatives. She even sent the man roughly $10,000 in gift cards and checks.
The man pretending to be “Montgomery,” who plays Billy Hargrove on the Netflix hit, told McKayla that he and his model girlfriend Liv Pollock were on the verge of a break-up due to her controlling ways. McKayla said she empathized with him because she, too, was in an unhappy marriage with a “toxic” partner.
McKayla and “Montgomery” had been communicating online for a year before he had asked her to be his girlfriend although they had never met in person. He requested that she keep their relationship on the DL because he had not broken up with his girlfriend, Liv. Eventually, “Montgomery” gave McKayla an ultimatum – to choose between him and her husband. As a result, the mother of one kicked her husband out of the picture. “Montgomery” later disclosed that Pollock had control over his finances, leading McKayla to support him financially for over a year.
Although she did have some initial suspicions, prompted by Montgomery never wanting to speak on the phone, McKayla became convinced after the scammer supposedly gave her “insider” information about an episode in season 4 that turned out to be true. It was later discovered that this “insider” secret had been made public months before the season was released.
Eventually, McKayla sought help from the “Catfished” YouTube series, and their internet investigation revealed that she had been deceived.
The real Montgomery has not publicly commented on the catfishing incident.
