A Baltimore County woman is accused of shooting her husband for allegedly molesting children at her daycare.
On Thursday, police responded to a man being shot at a hotel in D.C. around 7:40 pm. Upon arrival, police say, Shanteari Weems, 50, barricaded herself inside one of the rooms.
Court documents say that police arrived at the room and began speaking to Weems through the door. When they asked her to exit the room, Weems said she wanted to shoot herself.
During their discussion, authorities asked Weems was there someone else in the room, to which she responded, “he’s a child molester.” The victim then shouted out that he was in the room and had been shot in the head and leg.
Police eventually made their way inside the room and detained Weems. During their search, police found two handguns, one in Weems’s purse and the other inside an unlocked safe in the room.
The documents showed that Weems made some interesting revelations to authorities while detained. Weems says she and the victim had been married for five years, and she is a daycare owner.
On July 20, Weems and her husband met in D.C. when she started to receive calls from parents that the victim molested their children. Weems says the calls made her emotional, so she decided to bring up the allegations to her husband. Weems claims their conversation escalated into an argument. At some point, the victim stood up and walked towards Weems, which prompted her to shoot.
Weem repeatedly told authorities that she did not want to kill her husband but paralyze him instead. The husband was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
While the investigation is ongoing, the daycare will remain closed, according to a released statement from Baltimore County Police.
“Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C. Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted. As this investigation moves forward, the daycare facility located in Owings Mills remains closed.”
Shanteari Weems has been charged with assault with intent to kill and is being held without bond. The next hearing is scheduled for Monday.
