Every year, on August 26th, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. This day highlights the tireless efforts of advocates who fought for women’s rights and laid the groundwork for gender equality. As we look at the historical success made over the years, it’s the perfect time to look at how far the progress has come, especially with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Since earning her spot in the White House, Harris has solidified her place in the history books as the first woman, the first black woman, and the first person with a South Asian background to serve as Vice President of The United States of America. Her rise to one of the country’s highest offices symbolizes another barrier-breaking historically established to hinder women. Harris’s achievements showcase her persistent determination and shine a light on the relentless pursuit of gender equality.
While the significance of Harris’s accomplishments can’t be denied, it’s important to remember the progress the women before us made. Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth are just a few who fought for a future for women’s voices to be heard at the ballots. As a result, Harris’s presence in the White House represents the benefits of their dreams and hard work.
However, Harris’s political journey is not only about looking back into the past but also welcoming what’s to come. As Vice President, Harris has already made history, but her possibly having a chance at becoming the first female President of the United States lurks in the background. The fact that this kind of history could be made in 2024 shows us that the fight for gender equality is far from over.
Harris’s potential presidency could be seen as the pinnacle of the long journey that began with advocates from years ago. Just as those individuals broke down barriers that forbid women from voting, Harris has the chance to break down the toughest barrier in American politics. If she is elected, Harris’s leadership can inspire many women to rise to their highest self and not see limits in their lives.
Nonetheless, Women’s Equality Day is a time to celebrate the progress made and recognize the work that still needs to be done. As far as Vice President Kamala Harris, her story serves as a reminder that anything is possible regardless of gender.
