World Mental Health Day: Empowering Ways to Support Yourself and Those Around You

As we enter October and welcome the cooler fall season, World Mental Health Day is a special day of recognition within the month meant to raise awareness and serve as a day of personal restoration.

Established by the World Federation for Mental Health in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1992, World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10th. Its goal is to educate the public about mental wellness through destigmatization and outreach. While the theme changes each year, a central focus is providing resources to those who lack access to mental health services due to factors like insurance limitations or location.

There are many ways to get involved, such as reaching out to friends who are struggling, volunteering at mental health events, or using social media to spread awareness. Equally important is taking care of your own cognitive soundness.  Many companies offer mental health days for employees. Be sure to take advantage of one if available. Use this time for therapy, catching up with a friend, journaling, or practicing self-care in whatever form feels right.

Ultimately, World Mental Health Day, along with Mental Health Awareness Month in May, serves as a vital reminder of the importance of mental fitness in all aspects of life. By fostering compassion and support, we can help create a world where mental health is not only prioritized but celebrated.
