Icon of the Seas, a record-breaking Royal Caribbean ship, has finished the first part of its sea trials in Europe and is now preparing for its January 2024 debut.
According to an official statement, the ship is expected to become the largest cruise ship in the world and the first of its kind in the company’s Icon-class fleet.
Travelers aboard the cruise ship can expect to enjoy the world’s biggest water park on a ship called Category 6, which includes six water slides. The ship will also provide a “resort retreat,” a “seaside escape,” a theme park, and more than “40 options for dining, drinking, and entertainment.”
The “Ultimate Family Townhouse,” which Royal Caribbean advertises as a three-story “sprawling adventure-filled pad” with an in-suite slide, a karaoke station, and hidden nooks to find, will offer one-of-a-kind accommodations inside.
In addition to the largest pool at sea and eight “neighborhoods,” the ship’s 20 decks will feature the first dueling piano bar for Royal Caribbean, and Crown’s Edge, which is described as “a fear inducing challenge that’s part skywalk, part ropes course, part thrill ride and an all-out test of your courage.”
With a length of around 1,200 feet, the ship has a weight of approximately 250,800 tons. CNN estimates that it can accommodate 2,350 crew members and 5,610 passengers.
“Between preparations and the trials, the important step in the journey to bring Icon to life involved more than 2,000 specialists, hundreds of miles traveled, four 37- to 67-ton tugboats and more than 350 hours of work,” the release stated.
In preparation for its scheduled debut from South Florida in January 2024, the cruise will undergo its second set of sea trials later this year. These trials will ensure that the ship is ready for its upcoming voyage.
The Icon of the Seas will depart from Miami on 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises throughout the year, taking passengers to CocoCay, a private island owned by Royal Caribbean, as well as well-known tropical destinations including the Bahamas, Mexico, St. Maarten, and Honduras.
