Yara Shahidi, star of Black-ish and Grown-ish, will star as Tinkerbell in Disney’s live-action Peter Pan film, Peter Pan and Wendy, sources told Deadline.
Not much else is known about the film other than Jude Law is set to play Captain Hook, and Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson will play Peter Pan and Wendy. David Lowery is set to direct and co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks.
The movie will release to theaters and not go straight to Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.
The Twitter account for Grown-ish tweeted out the news of Shahidi’s casting on September 25, saying “sprinkle that fairy dust all around this news. Our girl @YaraShahidi as Tinkerbell in @disney’s upcoming live-action #peterpanandwendy.”
The role of Tinkerbell has traditionally been filled by white actresses, and Shahidi’s casting continues a trend of Disney diversifying roles traditionally filled by white women. Shahidi joins Hailey Bailey, of ChloeXHalle fame, who was cast in the role of Ariel in the upcoming live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid.
