Kanye West is making a bold statement in the music industry, urging key figures to honor his decision to adopt his legally changed name, “Ye.” A letter spearheaded by Kanye’s chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, and obtained by TMZ, has been dispatched to influential entities in the music world. This includes streaming services, publishers, and lyric websites, emphasizing the artist’s wish to be recognized as Ye henceforth.
Milo’s letter articulates that Kanye’s choice to alter his name was not made on a whim. Despite the significant brand equity attached to “Kanye West,” the Grammy-winning artist views his birth name as a “slave name” and seeks to abandon it across all platforms. “Ye is a Black man in America advocating for the same right to self-determination that is afforded to everyone else,” Milo explains in the letter.
