YNW Melly, known for his hit “Murder on My Mind,” has been transferred to a new jail for the first time since his 2019 incarceration. The move precedes his upcoming retrial for the alleged murder of his two childhood friends, YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser. According to records HipHopDX obtained, Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, was moved from Broward County Jail to the Paul Rein Detention Center in Pompano Beach, Florida.
The Paul Rein Detention Center, a maximum-security facility, emphasizes direct supervision and minimizes inmate movement. It features a design where high-security inmates can receive visitors without leaving their unit, separated by a non-breakable window and communicating through built-in telephones.
In addition to Melly, Cortlen Henry (YNW Bortlen) and Terrence Mathis are also implicated in related cases, with Bortlen charged alongside Melly in the murders, and Mathis in a separate case of witness tampering.
Judge John J. Murphy III scheduled the retrial to start on March 5, highlighting the urgency given Melly’s extended pre-trial detention exceeding 750 days. Despite the set date, the retrial has yet to begin.
Melly and YNW Bortlen are accused of orchestrating the October 2018 killings of Juvy and Sakchaser, attempting to disguise the act as a drive-by shooting. The potential consequence for Melly, if found guilty, is the death penalty, following a previous trial that concluded without a verdict last summer.
Amidst his legal woes, Melly remains active in the music scene, recently engaging in a public discourse over an alleged lyrical jab from Kendrick Lamar in the track “Like That” from Future and Metro Boomin’s album. Melly took to Instagram to highlight a misinterpretation of the lyrics, which mistakenly involved him instead of the intended Melle Mel, showcasing his continued engagement with the music industry from behind bars.
