A Tennessee community is grieving after a young couple was tragically killed when their Jeep collided with a semi-truck.
Austin Moffitt, 18, was driving with his girlfriend, Alexis McCann, 19, on Thursday when he failed to stop at a stop sign at Tennessee State Route 28 and John Burch Road near Dunlap, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The Jeep was struck on the driver’s side by a 2019 Freightliner.
Both the teen couple and the truck driver were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.
There was an outpouring of grief following news of the crash, with people posting tributes to Moffitt and McCann on social media. The two had recently graduated from Sequatchie High School.
“So heartbroken to hear the news of the loss of a former player and student of mine. Austin Moffitt was such a great young man and player,” a former teacher wrote on Facebook. In the post, he described McCann as “a sweet girl and a great student.”
“Austin was a wonderful young man and an outstanding football player. He will always be remembered in our hearts,” Sequatchie County Football wrote on Facebook. “Alexis was his biggest fan.”
The Sequatchie County Quarterback Club is raising money to help cover Moffitt’s funeral expenses. They will host a BBQ on October 7 at the Sequatchie County Football Stadium.
