Shortly after news broke on one of Young Dolph’s killers requesting a new trial, the rapper’s wife has come forward to address the recent filing.
To catch you up on the murder case, last month, Justin Johnson was found guilty on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and firearm possession by a convicted felon. However, just a few weeks later, Johnson filed a motion for a new trial, arguing that significant evidence used to convict him did not meet legal standards.
According to a local Memphis outlet, Johnson claimed that the jury should not have been given images of Dolph’s lifeless body, as they could bring on an emotional appeal, tampering with the trial’s fairness. Additionally, he stated that the court made a major mistake by not allowing him to sit next to his legal team during parts of the trial.
Since the recent motion filing, Dolph’s wife Mia Jaye, took a moment to speak out on Johnson’s trial request and called the move a “cruel joke.”
“It’s infuriating to see the person who took our loved one’s life now seeking a new trial over “insufficient evidence.” Their arrogance feels like a cruel joke to me and my loved ones,” she said in a statement. “We won’t let this deter us; we will keep fighting for justice and honor the memory of Adolph.”
Nonetheless, it’s unclear if Johnson will receive a new trial, but he is currently sentenced to life in prison for Dolph’s murder. As of now, Johnson is awaiting his sentencing for the remaining charges.
In November 2021, Dolph was unexpectedly killed by Johnson and another gunman named Cornelius Smith after approaching the rapper at a cookie shop in broad daylight. According to Smith, the two men tragically took Dolph’s life to collect the $100,000 bounty that was placed on his head by Yo Gotti’s late brother, Big Jook.
Following Johnson’s initial conviction, Mia took to social media and expressed a sense of closure and relief after the verdict was given.
“Today’s verdict brings relief and restores my confidence in the justice system,” she wrote on Instagram. “On behalf of my children, family and myself, I would like to thank law enforcement, the prosecution and everyone involved for their diligent work in presenting the facts that led to this conviction. We are also grateful to the public for standing with us and advocating for accountability throughout this process.”
