As part of his probation terms, Young Thug recently jumped on FaceTime with students at Emory University School of Law while his lawyer, Brian Steel, spoke in person.
Thug’s message was clear as he praised the students for their ambitions and urged them to consider what kind of lawyers they want to be.
“You gotta always look at it like they’re there to put us in prison, and you guys are here to keep us from prison,” he said, calling Steel “the best person possible.” Thug added, “He should be a professor. You guys should become lawyers. I think it’s very important to help people out of the situations they’re in the best you can.”
He then encouraged the students to reflect on their goals, asking, “What side do you want to be on? You want to put people in prison for mistakes? Because everybody makes mistakes—they’re human.”
Thug reminded the class that they, too, could face unexpected challenges in life. “And everybody on this phone, in this classroom, you always need to know that you’re one mistake away.”
Thug’s words pushed the students to think about law as a way to support others. “I feel like we need more people like Brian Steel on this earth and less people like that,” he said. “So I think it’s very, very, very important to be a lawyer over anything. Lawyers and doctors are the two greatest things that were ever founded. You actually help people. That’s doing the real God work.”
Thug left them with a final call to action: “I think every one of you in the classroom should become lawyers for sure. Anything you need from me, I’m here always. We need y’all.”
As you know, Thug was recently released after taking a plea deal that gave him time served plus 15 years probation for his YSL RICO trial.
It looks like the rapper is using his community service as a real chance to influence and inspire the next generation of lawyers.
