In a turn of events that reads like a script out of a thriller movie, social media influencer Addison Pierre Maalouf, popularly known as YourFellowArab, has been released from captivity in Haiti. The news came straight from Maalouf’s Twitter account, where he shared a poignant message attributing his release to divine intervention, falling between Good Friday and Easter – a period significant for its themes of suffering, sacrifice, and renewal in Christian faith.
Maalouf’s tweet read: “I was kidnapped purely for the color of my skin. I was kidnapped for being a ‘Blanc’. Can’t give any more detail till I’m home, but all I will say for now is – Glory be to God. Released between Good Friday & Easter, Christ is King. When you’re kidnapped in the middle of the Haitian Desert 60 minutes away from any civilization in a concrete shack surrounded by barbed wire, you don’t pray to a rainbow flag, you pray to God.”
This update comes after a distressing period of uncertainty following Maalouf’s kidnapping, where a $600k ransom was reportedly demanded for his release. The Atlanta-based YouTube star, known for his bold explorations into the underworld of criminals and gangs, had ventured into Haiti to interview the infamous warlord, Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier. However, his mission took a perilous turn when he was abducted, leaving his followers and the international community on edge.
Maalouf’s disappearance highlighted the dangerous levels of violence and the volatile situation in Port-au-Prince, prompting warnings from the US State Department against travel to Haiti. The situation in Haiti, where civilians often find themselves caught in the crossfire of escalating gang violence, underscored the risky nature of Maalouf’s work.
His release has been a source of relief and joy for friends, family, and followers, who have been anxiously awaiting news of his safety. The influencer’s reference to his faith and the timing of his release during a period of religious significance has sparked conversations about faith, resilience, and the power of divine intervention.
As details about his ordeal remain scarce, the social media community is torn with most people thinking he did it for clout.
Time will tell.
