Music fans and artists can now breathe a sigh of relief after YouTube and SESAC reached a deal that will restore countless videos back to the app.
Days ago, music videos from stars such as Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Jack Harlow, and more had been blocked due to the ongoing dispute with SESAC, the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers. The association oversees the public performance and playback rights for a wide range of musicians. With more than 15,000 affiliated songwriters, composers, and music publishers, SESAC serves a vital role in safeguarding their intellectual property. Unfortunately, YouTube’s licensing agreement with SESAC expired before they could reach new terms, resulting in the blockages.
Thankfully, on Monday, YouTube was able to restore its deal with the organization, which will restore the videos.
“We’re pleased that SESAC reconsidered our offer. We’ve reached a deal and content will come back up shortly. We appreciate everyone’s patience during this time,” YouTube confirmed in a statement to Variety.
Scott Jungmichel, president and COO of SESAC, also told the outlet that they’d been able to move past the hurdle. It’s unknown exactly what they failed to agree on initially, but the blockage also trickled down to YouTube Music. Users were not able to stream many records over the weekend. The affected music should be accessible within the coming days.
