Black excellence continues to soar in all fields and now in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Recent winner Zaila Avant-Garde not only took home the trophy for this year’s competition, but she also received an offer of a full scholarship to Louisiana State University, CNN reported.
“Your academic performance reflected scholarship first! You modeled intellectual excellence,” LSU President William F. Tate IV tweeted Saturday.
“@LSU_Honors awaits. I write to offer you a full scholarship to attend LSU. Here for you!” Tate wrote.
Although appreciative of the offer, the 14-year-old from Harvey, Louisiana, has hoped to play basketball for Harvard University one day.
She also has aspirations of pursuing several different careers, including working at NASA, coaching in the NBA, or working in neuroscience.
Avant-garde beat 208 contestants from five countries during Thursday night’s final session by correctly spelling “murraya.”
Which is a type of tree in case you’re like me and didn’t know.
Congrats to her!
