Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, continues to maintain a staunch stance against several top fashion houses that initially declined to work with the star. In a revealing session on “The Cutting Room Floor” podcast, Roach explained why you won’t see Zendaya wearing Chanel, Saint Laurent, Dior, or Gucci at major events.
Roach, who has been styling Zendaya since she was 14, shared that during her early career, attempts to collaborate with these esteemed brands were met with rejection. “I would write to the big five… and they would all say no. Try again next year. She’s too green. She’s not on our calendar,” Roach recounted. Echoing Julia Roberts’ famous line, he added, “Big mistake. Huge.”
Despite these early setbacks, Roach holds on to “the receipts” of those who turned them down. The only brand to move off his blacklist is Valentino, who later embraced Zendaya with a full campaign centered around her.
Roach’s loyalty to Zendaya is clear, as he emphasized, “When I said, ‘If you say no, it’ll be a no forever,’ that rang true for a long, long time.” Even after Zendaya graced the cover of American Vogue in 2017, Roach has continued to eschew these major brands for her public appearances, with the exception of Valentino.
Recently, Zendaya was celebrated for her stunning looks at the Met Gala, donning two gowns designed by John Galliano. Although Roach admits that Zendaya has worn outfits from the big five for magazine shoots, his tone suggests a reluctance, underscoring his protective approach towards Zendaya’s image and collaborations in the fashion industry.
