Growing up as the daughter of a hip-hop legend isn’t always as glamorous as it looks.
On a recent episode of her podcast, Heir Time, Reginae Carter got incredibly honest about the hurdles she faced while trying to get an education in Atlanta. Despite being a driven student, she revealed that her famous last name often closed doors before she could even walk through them, specifically when it came to the city’s elite private schools.
According to Reginae, her father’s music and public persona were used against her during the admissions process. “A lot of private schools in Atlanta rejected me because of my dad’s music. Like, they would literally tell me that they didn’t want the influence of Lil Wayne’s music around their students,” she shared. The rejection was a hard pill to swallow, especially since the judgment had nothing to do with her academic performance or character.
The struggle to find a school that saw her as an individual rather than a headline was a constant theme in her younger years. “It was crazy because I’m just trying to get an education, but they see my last name and they associate it with his lyrics and his lifestyle, and they don’t want that around their kids,” Reginae explained.
The gatekeepers of these institutions often let their perceptions of rap culture dictate her future, forcing her to look elsewhere for a welcoming environment.
Ultimately, she had to pivot and seek out institutions that valued diversity and looked past her family tree. “So I had to go to other schools that were more open or that didn’t care as much. It was really disappointing because some of those schools are supposed to be the best, but they judged me based on who my father is instead of who I am as a person,” she concluded.
Reginae’s story serves as a reminder that even children of the elite face unique forms of bias, proving that the weight of a legacy can be heavy when others refuse to see the person behind the name.
