Rick Ross and French Montana are heading into a Verzuz battle with more history between them than some fans may realize. Set for May 7 on Apple Music, the matchup brings together two rap veterans who have spent years appearing on each other’s records, moving through the same circles, and building overlapping eras of luxury rap and club anthems.
Long before this battle announcement, Ross and French were already trading verses on major releases. One of their most recognized collaborations came in 2012 on Ross’ “Stay Schemin,” which also featured Drake and became one of the biggest rap records of that period. That same year, French Montana tapped Ross for “Pop That” alongside Drake and Lil Wayne, a single that helped launch French deeper into the mainstream.
Their link-up continued in 2014 when Ross released “Nobody” featuring French Montana and Diddy, followed by “What A Shame,” another Ross track with French attached. Both records reinforced how often the two artists returned to each other when it was time for high-gloss production and heavyweight guest appearances.
Years later, they reunited again on French Montana’s “Touch The Sky” with John Legend in 2021, proving the chemistry never really left. More recently, the pair connected on “Minks In Miami,” showing their partnership still has life in a newer era.
That history is what makes this Verzuz more interesting than a simple hit-for-hit showdown. This is not two strangers stepping into competition. It is two longtime collaborators now stepping across from each other, each with records tied to the other’s timeline. On May 7, nostalgia, ego, and catalog depth all meet on one stage.
