Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter denied Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request for bail, citing concerns that the music mogul might tamper with witnesses in his ongoing sex trafficking case. Combs, who was arrested earlier this week, is facing three felony charges related to years of alleged sexual abuse and exploitation of women, according to federal prosecutors.
Judge Carter ruled that “the government has proven the defendant is a danger,” stating that the proposed bail package, which included a $50 million bond, regular drug tests, home detention in Miami, no female visitors, 24-hour security, and more, was insufficient to mitigate the risk of flight or witness interference.
Combs, 54, has pleaded not guilty to an indictment accusing him of orchestrating drug-fueled sex parties, referred to as “Freak Offs,” which he allegedly used to exploit both women and male sex workers. Prosecutors claim the events were elaborate productions that sometimes lasted for days, with Combs often recording the activities. The indictment also alleges that Combs used threats, violence, and blackmail to prevent victims from speaking out, enlisting the help of associates to carry out acts of coercion, including kidnapping and physical assaults.
Since his arrest on Monday night at a Manhattan hotel, Combs has remained in federal custody. Prosecutor Emily Johnson argued against bail, highlighting Combs’ history of intimidating accusers and witnesses. She pointed to messages from victims who claimed the rapper threatened to leak explicit videos of them engaging in sexual acts if they refused to participate in his events.
For now, Combs will remain in custody as the case moves forward.
