Olympic sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested Thursday in Orange County, Florida, following an alleged high-speed driving incident, according to jail records.
Authorities say Richardson was booked on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding, which applies when a driver is accused of traveling more than 100 miles per hour. Records show she was still in custody as of Thursday, with a bond set at $500.
The arrest comes months after Richardson delivered a standout performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She earned a gold medal as part of the United States women’s 4×100 meter relay team and added a silver medal in the 100 meter final, cementing her return to the top tier of global track competition.
Richardson’s Paris success followed a highly public setback earlier in her career. In 2021, she tested positive for THC, a chemical found in marijuana, which resulted in a 30-day suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The suspension prevented her from competing in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Olympics. At the time, Richardson acknowledged the violation and served the penalty.
Since then, she has reestablished herself as one of the sport’s most visible and accomplished sprinters. Her Olympic medals marked a significant moment in her career, highlighting both athletic consistency and resilience on the international stage.
No additional details about the speeding incident have been released by law enforcement. The case remains pending, and it is not yet clear when Richardson is expected to be released.
