Starbucks is tapping into artificial intelligence to change how customers decide what to sip next, blending mood, tech, and personalization into one seamless experience.
The coffee giant just rolled out a beta integration with ChatGPT that lets users describe exactly what they’re craving in plain language. Whether it’s a flavor, a vibe, or even a photo, the tool responds with tailored drink suggestions, marking a new push into AI-powered ordering. Prompts can range from “@Starbucks, I want something bright to start my morning,” to “@Starbucks, I’m craving an afternoon boost that isn’t too sweet.”
Users can even upload images, like their outfit or the weather, to inspire recommendations that match their mood. After receiving suggestions, customers can customize drinks, select a nearby store, and complete their order directly through the Starbucks app.
In testing, a request for “a sweet drink with coconut to brighten my morning” generated multiple options, including the Iced Ube Coconut Macchiato and Toasted Coconut Cream Cold Brew. The system also offered guidance, labeling one choice “most energizing” while describing another as “lighter and refreshing.”
The company says the feature is designed to help guests discover drinks “in a way that feels natural, personal and fun.”
The move aligns with broader industry trends. Recent research shows consumers increasingly favor personalized digital experiences, especially in food and beverage ordering. By combining AI with its rewards ecosystem, Starbucks is positioning itself to deepen engagement while making its massive menu feel more curated and accessible.
