A pre-dawn incident at a gated West Los Angeles estate has pulled one of boxing’s most celebrated families into a painful and very public legal matter. Daniel Leonard, 25, the youngest son of Hall of Fame boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly attempting to enter his father’s home in violation of a restraining order.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to the 1500 block of Amalfi Drive just before 5:30 a.m. following a radio call reporting a restraining order violation at the private residence. Sugar Ray’s security team called 911 after Daniel allegedly tried to gain entry by turning exterior door handles. Officers located him near the property’s pool house before taking him into custody. Court records in Los Angeles County indicate that the elder Leonard had recently sought the restraining order against his son, though the circumstances behind the filing remain unclear. A related court hearing is scheduled for June 15.
The arrest marks a stark contrast to what had publicly appeared to be a warm bond between father and son. As recently as the summer of 2025, the two were photographed together alongside Magic Johnson. In a November 2023 birthday post, Leonard wrote, “So happy to be with my son Daniel this weekend! I am so proud of you!!! Happy Birthday!!!” However, subtle signs of strain had emerged — Daniel was notably absent from family photos taken at his mother Bernadette’s birthday celebration in April, and in a Valentine’s Day post, Bernadette had written: “Happy Valentine’s to my hearts!!! Love you both beyond and we will get through this faze!”
Daniel is Sugar Ray’s youngest child with his wife Bernadette Robi. The boxing legend also has three other children — daughter Camille and sons Ray Charles Jr. and Jarrel — and a grandson, Devin Leonard. Neither Sugar Ray Leonard nor his son had issued a public statement as of Wednesday.
