A silent crisis is unfolding in neonatal wards across the country as a routine medical practice becomes the latest casualty of growing public health skepticism.
A devastating new report from ProPublica has uncovered a surge in infant deaths linked to vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), a condition that is almost entirely preventable with a single shot at birth.
The investigation, which reviewed hundreds of medical and autopsy records, highlights a chilling trend, more than 700 newborns died from spontaneous brain bleeding in 2024 alone. While some of these tragedies were tied to prematurity or liver issues, a significant number of medical specialists and CDC officials believe a meaningful portion was caused by a lack of vitamin K.
Vitamin K is the glue that allows blood to clot. Because babies are born with very low levels of this essential nutrient, the CDC notes they are 81 times more likely to suffer severe internal bleeding if they don’t get the supplement. The stakes couldn’t be higher, as 1 in 5 babies who develop this deficiency-related bleeding will die.
Despite the shot being standard care since 1961, refusal rates have skyrocketed. A national analysis of 5 million births found that rejections jumped from 2.9% in 2017 to over 5% in 2024. Doctors are worried that the shot is being unfairly lumped in with vaccine hesitancy, even though it is a vitamin supplement, not a vaccine.
A lot of the providers don’t have this on their radar, Dr. Jaspreet Loyal, a pediatric hospitalist at Yale Medicine, told ProPublica. The lack of data is almost acting like a reassurance for families that this risk is worth taking.
The reality on the ground is far from reassuring. In states like Tennessee and Ohio, doctors have reported cases of seemingly healthy babies suddenly collapsing weeks after birth due to massive intracranial hemorrhages.
For many parents, the realization of the risk comes too late. As healthcare providers push for better prenatal counseling, the message is clear, what seems like a natural choice to skip a shot is leaving the most vulnerable at risk of a catastrophic yet preventable tragedy.
