Salami snacks sold at Trader Joe’s have now been linked to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened people in multiple states.
Citterio brand Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks is the culprit behind at least 20 people falling ill in Michigan, Kansas, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Virginia, and New York. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking anyone who has purchased them to throw them away immediately.
The agency is also asking people to wash containers and counters that could have come in contact with the contaminated products. The snacks may be sold at stores other than Trader Joe’s.
Most of those who fell ill with salmonella were younger than 18 years old. Children younger than five years old are likely to experience serious complications, as well as elderly adults. Some of those who came down with salmonella were hospitalized. Thankfully, no deaths were reported.
The majority of people who develop salmonella experience fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, with illness usually lasting four to seven days.
