Donald Trump could be indicted on election interference charges in the upcoming months.
On Monday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis shared that she would be announcing the final decision this summer about whether or not Trump and his allies will face consequences for interfering in Georgia’s 2020 election. Willis has sent letters to local law enforcement and first resounding agencies officials such as Darin Schierbaum, Atlanta’s chief of police, and Matthew Kallmyer, director of the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency. In these notices, she confirmed possible criminal indictments to possibly be handed down between July 11th and September 1st. Fulton Sheriff Patrick Labat also received one of these letters.
The purpose of these notifications is to give law enforcement services enough time to prepare for a possible uprising similar to what was seen in the Capitol riots of 2020. Trump has previously stated that he’d encourage his supporters to demonstrate if prosecutors do call for criminal charges.
This is the latest development in Willis’ two-year investigation into the former president. She launched her probe after Trump told Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes” during a January 2021 phone call. This amount would have been just enough to get a lead over Joe Biden in Georgia and overturn his win in the state. A special grand jury questioned Trump’s former attorney Rudy Giuliani, Senator Lindsey Graham Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. After the grand jury conducted their investigation, Willis said charges were “imminent.”
