Donald Trump cracked a distasteful joke about nearly dozing off during a high-level meeting about the U.S. military’s strategy in Iran, telling rallygoers that reviewing potential mission names had him “falling asleep.”
The 79-year-old shared the story during a rally in Hebron, Kentucky, on Wednesday, March 11, while describing how officials asked him to help choose a name for the planned military operation.
According to Trump, military leaders presented him with a long list of options for the mission.
“They gave me a list of names to choose. ‘Sir, you could pick the name you’d like, sir.’ I said, ‘The name of what?’ ‘The name of the attack on Iran, sir,’” he told the crowd.
The president said that the discussion dragged on longer than he expected.
“And they gave me, like, 20 names, and I’m like, falling asleep,” he continued. “I didn’t like any of them. Then I see ‘Epic Fury.’ I said, ‘I like that name. I like that name.’ ”
The operation was ultimately given the title Operation Epic Fury.
Trump’s remarks come as his administration continues holding regular briefings with military leaders about the ongoing war involving Iran, where tensions remain high, and U.S. officials are closely monitoring potential retaliation risks.
Throughout his second term, Trump has repeatedly denied speculation that he falls asleep during lengthy meetings or official events, even as photos and video clips showing him with his eyes closed have circulated online.
The White House has also defended the president. After footage from a December 2025 Cabinet meeting sparked new online discussion, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was fully engaged.
“President Trump was listening attentively and running the entire three-hour marathon Cabinet meeting,” Leavitt said in a statement.
Trump has also acknowledged that long policy briefings can sometimes feel tedious, though he insists he remains attentive.
“It’s boring as hell,” he said in a January interview. “I have to sit back and listen, and I move my hand so that people will know I’m listening. I’m hearing every word, and I can’t wait to get out.”
