A life sentence now closes the legal chapter on a 2024 plot that put Donald Trump in danger during a routine day on the golf course.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, was sentenced to life in federal prison for attempting to assassinate Trump while he played golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. A jury reached its guilty verdict on September 23 after prosecutors detailed how the plan unraveled when a Secret Service agent spotted Routh with a firearm and opened fire, forcing him to flee.
The incident happened on September 15, 2024, during a tense election season and just months after another attempt on Trump’s life at a Pennsylvania rally left his ear grazed by a bullet. Authorities said the Florida plot came dangerously close to becoming deadly.
Prosecutors pushed for the maximum sentence, arguing the attempt was narrowly averted and could have ended in tragedy. Routh’s defense took a different approach. His attorney asked the court to consider a 27-year sentence, pointing out that no one was physically harmed. Prosecutors rejected that argument outright.
Routh, who is originally from North Carolina, fired his attorneys before trial and chose to represent himself. He told jurors his actions were misunderstood, saying, “To merely have a weapon in the presence of another is not intent,” and claiming he was guilty only of “caring too much.”
The jury did not agree. Routh was convicted of attempted assassination, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple firearm offenses, with the attempted assassination charge alone carrying a possible life sentence.
After the verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen. Before sentencing, he asked U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon for a “just punishment.” The court ultimately ruled that life in prison was warranted.
