Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair is scheduled to run June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebration. But the rollout hit turbulence after several planned performers backed out once the event’s ties to Trump became clear.
The original lineup included nine acts. By Sunday, May 31, only Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, and Flo Rida remained from the initial slate, according to PEOPLE and AP. Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, The Commodores, and Morris Day & The Time were among those who dropped out or distanced themselves from the event. Some artists said they believed they were joining a nonpartisan celebration before learning more about the organizing group and political connection.
Trump Went From Cancel It To Main Event
Before his appearance was officially confirmed, Trump posted on Truth Social that he was considering stepping in.
“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday, so I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World,” he wrote, adding that he was “ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility” of holding a rally instead.
Then came the full Trump branding package. He described himself as “the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar,” and “the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!).”
He said he would “take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!”
The Fallout Is Now The Headliner
Trump later doubled down on the artists who exited.
“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,” he wrote.
He also called for the concerts to be scrapped altogether, writing, “Cancel it,” before comparing the situation to his Kennedy Center fight, saying it was “just like I canceled my involvement with the failing and unsafe to be in Kennedy Center, because a Highly Conflicted, Crooked Federal Judge, said that I should not be allowed to spend my time and money in order to MAKE THE CENTER GREAT AGAIN, actually, far greater than it ever was before!”
Freedom 250 adviser Danielle Alvarez confirmed Trump will headline the June 24 opening event, one day before the fair officially opens. Meanwhile, a senior administration official summed up the rollout to The New York Times as “a mess.”
