Tyler Perry is set to take center stage once again, this time for the impact he’s made far beyond the screen.
The powerhouse filmmaker, producer, and studio owner will receive the Innovator Award at the sixth annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards, a ceremony known for celebrating figures who shape and influence Black culture across entertainment and media. The honor specifically recognizes an individual who has “transformed a specific genre of the entertainment industry” while maintaining “longevity and consistency in their field.”
Perry’s career spans more than three decades, and his output hasn’t slowed. From expanding his longstanding Madea universe to releasing new films and series through major partnerships, he continues to move across platforms with ease. Recent and upcoming projects include Netflix titles like “Joe’s College Road Trip,” “Beauty in the Black” season two, and “The Six Triple Eight,” alongside films such as “Mea Culpa” and “Straw.” He’s also developing fresh content, including “Where There’s Smoke” and “Why Did I Get Married Again?”
Beyond content, Perry’s business moves remain just as impactful. His Atlanta-based Tyler Perry Studios stands as a historic milestone, marking the first major film studio fully owned by a Black creator. The massive property includes multiple sound stages named after influential Black entertainers.
The event, hosted by Tiffany Haddish with Babyface serving as musical director, is scheduled for June 5 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Proceeds will support the Hollywood Cares Foundation, which focuses on programs for underserved youth in Black and Brown communities.
