The daily commute in Dubai is about to move from the highway to the sky. Uber and Joby Aviation have officially announced a partnership to launch “Uber Air,” an electric air taxi service set to begin commercial operations before the end of 2026.
This new “layer of urban transportation” will be fully integrated into the existing Uber app, allowing riders to book a flight with the same one tap experience they use for cars.
The service aims to slash travel times across the city, for example, a journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah that typically takes 45 minutes in traffic will be reduced to just 12 minutes in the air.
The aircraft being deployed is a sophisticated all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle designed to carry four passengers and a pilot. Built with six tilting propellers, these taxis lift off like a helicopter but fly with the speed and efficiency of an airplane, reaching top speeds of 200 mph. They are also engineered to be remarkably quiet; at cruising altitude, the noise level is roughly equivalent to the hum of a refrigerator, ensuring they blend into the ambient sound of city life without disturbing residents. With a 100-mile range on a single charge, the fleet is optimized for quick, back-to-back hops between the city’s busiest districts.
Infrastructure for the launch is already under construction, with four primary “vertiports” planned for the initial network.
These dedicated takeoff and landing sites will be located at Dubai International Airport, Dubai Mall, the American University of Dubai, and Atlantis The Royal on Palm Jumeirah. Passengers can expect a premium experience that includes comfortable seating, large panoramic windows for views of the skyline, and space for carry-on luggage. To ensure safety, every flight will be operated by a certified commercial pilot rather than flying autonomously.
While pricing will be finalized closer to the launch date, Uber expects the service to fall within its premium “Uber Black” price range, making it a viable option for business travelers and tourists looking to save time.
Joby has secured an exclusive six-year agreement with Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority to be the sole provider in the city, but expansion is already on the horizon. With over 50,000 miles of flight tests completed, the company is working toward FAA certification to eventually bring this high-speed aerial technology to major U.S. markets like Los Angeles and New York.
