A young linebacker for the University of Miami football team has been hit with serious charges after a devastating crash in Largo back in May left three people dead and one critically injured.
Twenty-year-old Adarius Hayes turned himself in on Friday and is now facing three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious injury.
Police say Hayes was behind the wheel of a Dodge Durango on May 10th when he was weaving through traffic at nearly 80 miles per hour in a 40 zone.
Hayes made a rapid and dangerous maneuver, changing lanes from the curb lane to the median lane, crossing three lanes of traffic while overtaking other vehicles,” said Largo Police Chief Mike Loux.
Hayes is accused of slamming into a Kia Soul driven by 78-year-old Gail Price, who was making a lawful turn. She, along with 10-year-old Jabari Solomon and 4-year-old Charlie Solomon Rivera, died on the scene. Their father, Herbert Rivera, survived but suffered serious injuries.
“You have the death of three innocent people that were just driving, traveling on the roadways,” said Chief Loux. “So yes, they’re very serious charges.”
Police say search warrants, surveillance footage, and the car’s black box helped confirm the speeds involved. Hayes has a history of prior traffic violations, including speeding and careless driving.
He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and released on $350,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing.
