Ben Stiller watched the Knicks suffer for decades, so now that New York finally got its championship moment, he is making sure the cameras keep rolling.
The actor and director has confirmed a new multi-part documentary series about the New York Knicks, created in partnership with HBO, A24, and the NBA. The project arrives just days after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win their first NBA championship since 1973, ending a 53-year drought that had generations of fans waiting, pacing, arguing, and praying in orange and blue.
Stiller announced the project during an appearance on Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s “Roommates Show,” where he made it clear this will not just be a championship highlight reel. It sounds more like a love letter, a therapy session, and a historical record all rolled into one.
“Obviously, I’ve been shooting some stuff on my phone,” Stiller told the hosts. “But it’s going to be about all eras of the Knicks, and this team obviously, there’s a culmination here, of something that’s been going on for a long time. It’s super exciting. It’s great to have had all this access to your team, which is great. We’re going to probably be shooting a little bit more during next season, and I’m going to hit you guys up for some interviews.”
That access is the key. According to reports, the documentary will trace the franchise’s history, culture, and legacy, building toward the 2026 title run that brought basketball glory back to Madison Square Garden. Stiller is expected to direct the series, with A24 and HBO bringing serious prestige to a story Knicks fans already consider cinematic.
When Brunson asked about the timeline, Stiller said they’ll be “working on it” over the “next year.”
The timing could not be more New York. The city is still celebrating after Brunson led the Knicks to a Game 5 win over the Spurs, dropping 45 points and earning Finals MVP honors. The championship sparked a massive ticker-tape parade through Lower Manhattan, with Knicks legends, players, and celebrity fans joining the party. Spike Lee, long known as one of the team’s loudest and most loyal courtside fixtures, was among the famous faces tied to the celebration of a franchise that finally gave its faithful something bigger than nostalgia.
Stiller also posted about the news on social media, sharing his excitement over the Knicks, A24, and HBO collaboration. For a fanbase that has lived through heartbreak, punchlines, false starts, and rebuilds, the doc has plenty to work with.
The Knicks’ last championship came in 1973 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, more than five decades later, New York has a new title, a new era, and apparently, a prestige documentary on the way.
