Now that travelers are getting back out there, we thought it would be an excellent time to highlight some Black-owned hotels worldwide.
From Morocco to the U.S., here are eight Black-owned hotels and resorts travelers can support whether they’re looking for a cozy bed and breakfast or an all-inclusive experience.
First on the list is the La Maison In Midtown, located in Houston, Texas. The accommodation is described as a cozy urban bed and breakfast that boasts a southern charm in the heart of the city. As of today, you can stay at the gem at the price of $169 a night.
If you’re traveling to the east coast, you can check out The Ivy Hotel in Mount Vernon, Baltimore. It’s owned by Eddie and Sylvia Brown and has been rated a luxury hotel. It’s also the state’s first and only Relais & Chateaux property. It’s considered a 5-star hotel that offers guests a “highly exclusive oasis” vibe during their stay. And if you are a high roller, they have a black car service at your beck and call.
Tennessee’s Urban Cowboy B&B may be the fit for those who like a more countryside feel. It’s nestled in Nashville, which pairs very well with the southern-inspired theme that runs through the eight suites offered at the historic Victorian mansion. Rooms start at $299 a night.
Salamander Resort & Spa, owned by BET co-founder Sheila Johnson, is located in Middleburg, VA, and is the D.C. area’s first Forbes Five-Star destination resort. It features a full equestrian center, tennis courts, a complimentary putting green for aspiring golfers and more. Guests can also indulge in spa treatments, gourmet dining, countryside bike tours and more.

The Jnane Tamsna hotel, located in Marrakech, Morocco, is perfect for those looking for both a fabulous and urban resort. Owned by Maryanne Loom-Martin, this North African resort includes five pools and nine acres of gardens. Majestic feels! Its starting price is $210 (Euros) a night. Just keep in mind that you may never want to leave.
Cape Town, South Africa, has also made the list with iKhaya Lodge. The property is located in the heart of Cape Town and offers a nice mix of modern and traditional African styles. What’s unique about the location is that the rooms are loft-style apartments (some with mountain views), so you get a home away from home feel. It makes perfect sense because “ikhaya” translates to “home” in English.
Ocean West Boutique Hotel is for those that want an island vacation. Located in Nassau, Bahamas, the hotel 10-room hotel comes with breathtaking views of Lake Killarney on its south border and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. And if you’re not the type to take a break from working out, the stay offers a rooftop fitness center to its guest. A top feature is that the boutique is close to many attractions, for one, Cable Beach, where visitors can shop and enjoy the nightlife.
If you’re looking for a luxurious Caribbean getaway, check in to Spice Island Beach Resort, located on the island of Grenada. Offering an intimate all-inclusive experience, the AAA Five Diamond, family-owned resort is situated on the famous Grand Anse Beach, voted the best beach in the world by Conde Nast Traveler. It features spacious suites and villas, gourmet dining, an outdoor pool and access to a plethora of watersports.
It’s 2022 and although there is still a lot to be done when it comes to Black-owned accommodations, it shows strides are being made. It’s helpful to know where you are welcome in a world where Black travelers face unconscious bias, racism, and a history of oppression in the travel industry.
