Twitter announced on Thursday that it is removing a verification system that awarded blue checkmarks to accounts it had determined to be authentic.
Starting April 1, the verification system will be removed.
The once free check marks will now only be accessible on Twitter Blue.
Notable accounts are not necessary for Twitter Blue. However, being truthful, active, and older than 90 days are requirements for the service.
On Friday, Elon Musk said that users “affiliated with a verified organization” will still be verified.
This could indicate that many Twitter users who are working professionals will either keep their verification checkmarks or receive new ones.
Social media expert Matt Navarra also noted that Twitter Blue subscribers would have the option to hide their verification check marks.
