While some fathers encourage their sons to follow their own sports dreams, others want their boys to follow in their footsteps. But, most just want their kids to be safe, regardless of their career choice, which is why #DenzelWashington was happy to see his son hang up his football cleats for good.
“He’s had I don’t know how many concussions, a broken collar bone, a torn up knee and Achilles [tendon],” Washington revealed of his son’s short-lived professional football career. “No, I’m glad it’s over.”
John David, 33, graduated from Morehouse College with a D2 resume that led to a professional opportunity. From 2006-07, he played for the St. Louis Rams, before he went overseas to join the American Team Rhein Fire. However, after a short-stint in the big leagues, David gave it all up to pursue acting. Oddly enough, the actor’s breakout role was as a football player for The Rock’s “Ballers” on HBO.

Although Washington allowed him to make his own decisions, he’s says he’s beyond pleased with David’s choices. And besides that, “he’s really good at what he does.”

“That’s my son, I love my boy and I’m just happy he’s his own man, he’s independent,” Washington revealed. “He’s really good at what he does, and the fact that he’s been fighting to make his own mark, he didn’t want any help from me, I didn’t help him get onto Ballers or anything like that. The only way I helped him get into Ballers was introducing him to football as a kid, so maybe that helped.”

“But I’m just proud of he and all my children,” Washington continued. “My wife did a great job, they are good kids. Humble, hard-working, not afraid of hard work, that’s all you can ask for.”

In the meantime, Washington is gearing up for the release of his new movie, “The Equalizer 2,” while David anticipates the return of “Ballers,” and the release of his new film, “BlacKkKlansman.”
