Lizzo just gave fans a hilarious but very real reminder that before the sold out tours, Grammy wins, and chart domination, she was figuring it out like everybody else. On Thursday, the singer responded to a viral post about her Instagram handle “lizzobeeating” and revealed the page actually started as a food blog during a rough financial period.
“Fun Fact: I started my ig as a food blog when I was broke so I could eat for free but then my music blew up,” Lizzo wrote.
The tweet came after another user joked, “just found out lizzo’s instagram name is lizzo be eating and not lizzo beating.”
And honestly, the backstory makes the name even better.

From Free Meals To Viral Fame
Long before Lizzo became a global superstar, she was building a social media presence around food content and local restaurants. At the time, she was still grinding through the independent music scene after relocating from Houston to Minneapolis to pursue music full time. According to multiple biographies, Lizzo spent years developing her sound in smaller venues while balancing financial struggles and independent releases.
That hustle mentality eventually became part of her appeal. Fans connected with the honesty, humor, and confidence she brought online long before mainstream fame arrived.
Ironically, the same Instagram page built around finding free meals later became one of the most recognizable celebrity accounts in music.
“Truth Hurts” Changed Everything
Lizzo’s breakout moment arrived with “Truth Hurts,” originally released in 2017 before exploding into a massive hit two years later. The song eventually reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and turned Lizzo into one of music’s biggest stars.
Her 2019 album “Cuz I Love You” pushed her fully into pop culture’s center, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. By 2020, Lizzo led the Grammy nominations with eight nods and won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts,” along with awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
She later added another major career milestone when “About Damn Time” won Record of the Year at the 2023 Grammys, making her the first Black woman to win the category since Whitney Houston in 1994.
A Social Media Origin Story Fans Actually Love
What makes Lizzo’s revelation hit differently is how believable it feels. Before influencer culture became a full blown industry, plenty of creatives used food blogging, reviews, and social media partnerships to survive while chasing bigger dreams.
Lizzo just happened to turn that side hustle into a Grammy-winning career.
And somewhere along the way, “lizzobeeating” accidentally became one of the funniest celebrity handles on the internet.
