If you grew up anywhere near the DMV, you already know what this record means. That bounce, that pocket, those congas talking back to the snare. UCB built a whole movement off that song, and watching Lizzo flip it into her own version is the kind of cosign go-go deserves on the regular.
“Sexy Lady” lives outside of trends. Two decades in and it still hits every cookout, every house party, every wedding reception where somebody knows what’s good. UCB has been a cornerstone of the genre alongside legends like Rare Essence, Backyard Band, TCB, and Junkyard, keeping the pocket alive while the rest of the world finally caught on. Wale put go-go on his early mixtapes, Beyoncé borrowed the bounce on a few records, and now Lizzo is sliding the whole genre in front of her 11 million followers with her own remake of a record DC has been protecting for twenty years.
The timing of this moment is too perfect to ignore. Go-go is officially celebrating 50 years, and Baller Alert and Front Porch are presenting A Celebration of 50 Years of Go-Go at the 2026 Roots Picnic, hosted by Noochie and Kenny Burns. The festival lands May 30 and 31 at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, with JAY-Z and The Roots headlining Saturday and Erykah Badu closing things out Sunday. Our go-go set is a love letter to the District, pulling all-star players from every band that built the sound and putting them on one stage where the rest of the country can finally feel it the way DC has been feeling it for half a century.
So shoutout to Lizzo for not just nodding at the culture but stepping into the booth and doing the record justice. Shoutout to UCB for making something that refuses to age.
