The Cleveland Cavaliers took Duke point guard Kyrie Irving with the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft on Thursday night. Minnesota followed by taking Arizona forward Derrick Williams second, according to Eurosport.
Cleveland got the top pick after a season that included a 26 game losing streak and LeBron James leaving for the Miami Heat, Eurosport reported. Irving played just 11 games at Duke last season after a toe injury, averaging 17.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists. He was born in Australia, and officials there hope he will eventually play for their national team. Irving said any decision on that would come later.
He already knows the comparison is coming. “I’m really not looking to replace LeBron honestly, just try to be Kyrie Irving,” he said. Cleveland fans are about to measure every move he makes against the player who just left town, and the new face of the franchise sounds ready for it.
