10 Ways to Know You’re Dating a Real Man

From how he handles conflict to how he supports your goals, these are the signs you are with a grown man

Plenty of men can talk a good game, but the way a man actually shows up in a relationship tells you everything. If you are trying to figure out whether you are dating a real man or a boy who just looks the part, here are 10 signs to look for.

10. He sees more than your looks.

Compliments on your body are nice, but if that is all he ever talks about, pay attention. A real man is drawn to your mind, your heart and your sense of humor. He praises the things you have built and worked on, not just the things you were born with.

9. Your ambition does not threaten him.

A man with his own goals wants a woman with goals too. He is not intimidated when you chase a promotion, start a business or go back to school. He wants a partnership where both of you are winning, not a setup where one person has to shrink so the other can feel big.

8. He has a life outside of you.

You should be a priority, but you should not be his entire world. A real man has friends, interests and plans of his own. When he builds his whole life around you, it puts pressure on the relationship that no one can carry for long.

7. He does not run from hard conversations.

How a man handles conflict says a lot about him. A real man does not dodge your questions, go silent for days or make excuses. When something needs to be talked about, he sits down and talks about it, even when it is uncomfortable.

6. He is straightforward.

There are no mind games with a real man. He tells you where he stands and what he wants, and he does it honestly and with kindness. You never have to decode his texts or guess what he meant.

5. He trusts you.

Unless you have given him a reason not to, a real man does not go through your phone, track your every move or accuse you of things you did not do. Insecurity and jealousy eat away at a relationship over time, and a secure man does not bring that energy into your home.

4. He keeps his cool.

When you are out together and another man shoots his shot, a real man does not turn it into a scene. He handles it calmly and confidently because he knows who you are leaving with at the end of the night.

3. He respects you.

Respect is not optional. A real man never pressures you into anything you are not comfortable with, never belittles you and never puts his hands on you. If a relationship ever becomes unsafe, physically or emotionally, you deserve to walk away.

2. He puts in the effort.

A boy wants the benefits of a relationship without doing the work. A real man plans the dates, remembers what matters to you and keeps showing up long after the honeymoon phase is over. Your happiness matters to him, and his actions prove it.

1. He makes you better without trying to change you.

The best sign of all is how you feel when you are with him. A real man pushes you toward your goals, celebrates your wins and helps you grow, all while loving who you already are. He does not try to turn you into someone else. He just makes you want to be the best version of yourself.

If your man checks most of these boxes, hold on to him. If he checks very few, it may be time to ask yourself what you are really getting out of the relationship.
