After a weeks-long battle with COVID-19 complications, including the development of gangrene in his legs, a 10-year-old boy in Texas has died.

According to his aunt, Ashley Engmann, who told KTRK-TV in Houston that the boy’s mother made the difficult decision to take him off life support on Wednesday.

On Sept 30, Zyrin Foots was hospitalized for Covid-19 before being diagnosed with a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).

According to the CDC, MIS-C is a disorder in which multiple body regions can become inflamed, and “many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19, or had been around someone with COVID-19.”

According to his aunt, the complications made it impossible for Zyrin’s heart to pump blood to his limbs, and as a result, the boy “developed gangrene in the legs,” forcing the family to make a tough decision.

“They gave my sister a choice: to amputate his legs and arms or let him go,” she said. “Without the amputation, he doesn’t have any chance to live. With it, he has a 25 percent chance.”

Engmann went on to say that her sister chose to remove Zyrin’s life support  “because that’s the most humane and compassionate thing she can do for her child.”

Zyrin was Engmann’s sister’s eldest child, according to a GoFundMe account set up to help “final expenses” and funeral fees.

According to People, The campaign has raised almost $17,000 as of last night.
