Chicago police shot and killed a 13-year-old boy on the Westside last Monday and have yet to provide many details about the fatal shooting.
According to CNN, the Cook County medical examiner identified the boy as Adam Toledo, who lived near the shooting location in a neighborhood called Little Village.
In their initial statement, the police department claimed an officer shot the boy during an “armed confrontation” and tweeted a photo of a gun that was said to have been recovered at the scene.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown released a follow-up statement on Thursday identifying the person shot by police as a juvenile but interestingly failed to mention the boy’s age and declined to release his name at that time.
Now the family of the 13-year-old boy is rightfully demanding answers.
“I just want to know what really happened to my baby,” Elizabeth Toledo said through tears. “The cops shouldn’t … they had a lot of options, but not kill him. They could have shot in his leg, his arm, up in the air. I don’t know. But kill my baby?”
In a statement released by the family, they pointed out that they were not notified of the teen’s death for two days.
Adeena Weiss Ortiz, the Toledo family attorney, said on Friday that police told them that Adam died but was not aware that he was shot and killed until his mother met with authorities in person.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty for 30 days, Superintendent Brown said.
