The man who tried to rush the stage at a Donald Trump rally in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday has been identified in reports as Thomas, a 22 year old acting major at Wright State University.
Thomas was seen on video climbing a barricade and reaching toward the stage before he was stopped by Secret Service agents. Reports say he was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. After his release, he tweeted that he had spit in his hand before shaking Trump’s hand at the start of the rally. He had also posted about the plan beforehand, writing that he was tired of the violence at Trump events and that he was going to “check my people” on Saturday. Hours before the rally he wrote that he had “never been more scared in my life.”
According to news reports, Thomas has taken part in demonstrations before, including an anti-racism protest at his school in April 2015 and a counter protest against the Confederate flag in Stone Mountain, Georgia, the summer before. He has also said publicly that the Black protesters he stood with deserve the credit. Trump and others reacted to the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
He has not been convicted of any crime, and the facts of the case are still developing.
